24 oz. tubs of Spectrum shortening are just $3.99. This stuff is Organic with no transfats or hydrogenated stuff. Healthy pie crusts? Well, sure-- relatively healthy. Every little thing adds up on the good side. If you make homemade pie, God bless you! Pie is important! We need pie these days.

Pumpkins & Squash Have Arrived! Squash Tips & Trivia...

Well, just recently-- probably during the midnight hour, it seems all our watermelons turned into pumpkins... and spaghetti squash too! It happens like this every October. One day - bins of melons - the next, pumpkins & winter squash. And more are showing up!

Did you know the original pumpkin pies, during colonial times, were made right in the pumpkin with no crust or pie pan? Yep! They roasted them (probably in some "hearth"), hollowed them out, roasted 'em, filled with a custard mixture and roasted them till the custard set up. Then they scooped out the cooked pumpkin part with the custard. And that was pumpkin pie. 

Today, many pumpkin pie fillings are made from yams, sweet potato pie, right! Which reminds me that we also have yams, including Organic yams in the Produce section. 'Tis the season for the likes of squash & yams!

Spaghetti Squash are just 2/$3 right now. This type of squash shreds out into noodle-like strands when cooked. People on low carb & gluten-free diets like to use spaghetti squash in pasta & noodle recipes. Just Google "Spaghetti Squash" for endless ideas and images and inspiration.
