Olive Oil Tasting!

Grocery Outlet is legendary for huge savings on olive oil. And right now, Kennewick Grocery Outlet has quite a selection!

Two brands are USDA Certified Organic-- it's all Extra-Virgin and best of all, it's all ridiculously low priced!
Stop in this Friday afternoon from 2:00 - 6:00 (extended 11:00 - 3:00 Saturday), and sample a few different olive oils with us. There's no better way to discover the flavor differences without spending a ton. And maybe you'll end up taking some home that might cost 2-3 times more elsewhere.
We even have some nifty imported Italian breadsticks for testing the various oils. Or if you're a serious olive oil connoisseur, let us pour you some straight shots!!!
Either way, there's great olive oil to be tasted and savored. So tell your friends. The primo stuff doesn't stay on the shelves long!

Asian Spring Pepper Poppers - Friday Food Tasting

Sweet deals on Mini Sweet Peppers - 2 lb. pkg

Ground Turkey - Lighter fare with high protein!
This week's Friday Food Tasting at Kennewick Grocery Outlet features "Asian Spring Pepper Poppers" for your sampling pleasure. Join us from 1:00 - 5:00 (or later!)

What better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring than with something bright, light, fresh and a even a little zesty! We're excited to have a good supply of Mini Sweet Peppers. So far this week, I've been snacking with them, adding to salads-- and yesterday I stuffed some with Ricotta cheese, roasted them and served with Marinara sauce and pasta on the side.

Friday's tasting will take a different direction.

Asian Spring Pepper Poppers

Ingredients:

1 pk (2 lbs = approx 30 ct) Mini Sweet Peppers
1 pk (20oz. or 1.25 lb) Ground Turkey
*1 cup cooked Sticky White Rice
1/4 cup Chopped Green Onions
1/4 cup Fresh Cilantro- fine chopped (and use for garnish)
2 cloves Fresh Garlic - minced
2 Tbs Rice Vinegar (or sub fresh lemon/lime juice)
1 Tbs Soy Sauce
2 tsp Fresh Ginger- grated
2 tsp Sesame Oil

Directions:

*Cook rice - add 1/2 cup white rice to 2 cups boiling water, return to boil, set burner temp to low, cover for 20-25 minutes. Makes 2 cups cooked rice.

Heat large pot (8 qt) with lightly salted water. Remove stem ends from peppers and boil for one minute. Remove with large slotted spoon and chill in large bowl of ice water. Note: The purpose of parboiling the peppers is to relax them a bit for easier stuffing and eating. They will still be bright and have a crunchy texture.

While water is heating, warm up a skillet, add sesame oil, ground turkey, white parts of chopped green onions and garlic. Saute' at medium heat until turkey fully cooked (no longer pink- not necessary to brown the meat).

Combine meat and rice when finished cooking, and allow to cool in large mixing bowl (stirring frequently to cool faster).

When meat/rice is cool to touch, mix in all remaining ingredients and stuff mixture into the peppers. Refrigerate in large dish to chill awhile.

To serve, slice in lengthwise halves or in rounds if you prefer, using a serrated knife. Arrange on a serving platter, garnishing with whole cilantro sprigs (maybe a few lime wedges too). Serve with your favorite soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, rice vinegar and/or chili pepper sauce.

Pasta Sauce Tasting With Quinoa Meatless Meatballs!

Meatballs, right?
Made with Red Quinoa???
SAUCE!!!
Come in to Kennewick Grocery Outlet this Friday, March 14, at 2:00PM for a special sauce tasting from our current pasta sauce selection. Don't worry about the above photo-- we're sampling more than just 2 sauces, okay.

Quinoa (pronounced kinwah or keen-wah) meatless meatballs will be our featured sauce platform. We recently received a supply of red quinoa in 1lb. packs, and are discovering healthy and tasty ways to enjoy this stuff. Quinoa is a highly nutritious seed that you prepare & serve just like rice. But unlike rice, it is a complete protein source. It's also gluten-free.

If you're already familiar with quinoa, you'll appreciate our low current $3.99/lb. price! Best quinoa value in town!

The top photo shows actual quinoa balls, made by yours truly. Here's how to make 'em yourself:

Ingredients:
1 lb. pack Red Quinoa 2 cups
(makes approx 40 golf ball size)
3 cups bread or cracker crumbs
For gluten free, substitute 3 cups crushed regular Cheerios
4 eggs
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
3 Tbs Italian herb blend i.e. basil, oregano & fennel seeds
2 Tbs Worchestershire sauce
3 garlic cloves, minced or 1 Tbs garlic powder.
1.5 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Directions:
Bring 4 cups lightly salted water to a boil in a 6 qt sauce pan. Whisk in quinoa. Return to boil for 3 minutes. Turn heat to low/med low. When boil simmers down, cover the pan for 25 minutes. After 25 min, remove from heat and keep covered for additional 20 minutes.

Dump cooked quinoa into large mixing bowl and allow to cool, uncovered; stirring periodically until warm to touch. Fold in ALL remaining dry and liquid ingredients including eggs (minus shells... yeah, that's a joke).

Start rolling in golf ball sizes, placing on a large, lightly greased/sprayed cookie sheet. You should end up with 40-44 balls. Bake in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.

Add to your favorite sauce and serve with pasta or however you like to accompany meat balls. This same recipe also works as a stuffed peppers filling!

NOTE: If you'd rather try substituting quinoa for meat in your own favorite meatball recipe, I just recommend increasing your usual seasoning proportions a bit and using the Worchestershire sauce to help bring in a savory & meat-like flavor.

When you come in, we can talk about more quinoa ideas!
